Question by pdooma: What are some funny Christmas traditions your family does?
My brother and sister and I send one another the ugliest Christmas cards we can find every year. It’s a contest of which one is the worst. The rule? You have to buy it the same year you send it, so no hoarding ugly cards if you find a stash.

What do you do to keep things fun in December?

We usually all pile into the ‘ol bulldozer and knock down someone’s house while they are at work as a prank. The look on their faces when they get home is priceless!

We sneak KU Christmas ornaments onto our aunt and uncle’s tree. (They are diehard K-State fans.) They don’t find most of them until they’re taking their tree down. lol

To give our non-Christmas kids something to do during the season, we go thrifting for the ugliest Christmas sweaters we can find all throughout the season, and those are what we wear whenever we can (and there are some *really* ugly ones). I don’t know, kind of dumb, but I think it’s fun.

I always got a foul gag gift for my mil and signed it with my bil’s name. Now my sil went and divorced him and ruined all the fun.

I try to be clever wrapping things, and sometimes I enjoy getting corny about it. My step-mom got my dad a remote starter for his truck back when I just had to sign my name to the present too…

I emptied a box of Kleenex and taped the remote to the bottom of the box, and put the Kleenex back on top and wrapped it like that. When he opened it I told him tissues was all I could afford and I figured it was appropriate because he should be sad about it.

He knew me much better than that and started pulling all the Kleenex out!

I have 3 sisters and my mother has always made us stockings out of her old pantyhose. I know it sounds really freakishly weird, but it’s our very favorite thing about Christmas! Do you have any idea how much stuff you can shove into a size Queen Tall leg of pantyhose??! Year after year we have photos of us four girls with these stuffed pantyhose draped around our necks. It’s awesome. Seriously.

My mother gives my siblings and I the ugliest sweaters she could find. She would sometimes go to thrift stores just to find them. It was always one of the highlights of the year.

About 7 years ago most of my relatives when broke to top it off my dear auntie found out she had cancer. For the first time we couldn’t afford to buy everyone a gift so we decided to turn a negative thing into a positive thing and we played a game of elephant gifts only we tried to come up with the most wacky and stupid gifts we could find. One year I got a “Smore Maker” another year I got a basket full of “lobster flavored cola with Sea Cucumber flavored popcorn and assorted shrimp scented soaps.” my cousin bought it on a business trip to Japan.
